OUR STORY

The Junior League of Wilkes Barre (JLWB) is an organization of women in the Wilkes Barre, PA area committed to promoting voluntarism, the potential of women, and building better communities.

JLWB provides a strong foundation for civic leadership and connects women who share a commitment to community transformation.  Our organization has remained an important force for improving the lives of women and children in the Luzerne County area for over 85 years.  Through JLWB training and volunteer opportunities, you will make a positive impact in our community and find social outlets for personal growth.

We want you to be a part of our team.

The JLWB holds General Membership Meetings (GMMs) on the first Tuesday of each month and begin at 6 PM.  We meet at Canteen Park located at 181 Market Street in Kingston, PA.  We do not hold GMMs during the months of July and August.

The GMMs are open to non-members, so feel free to join and see what JLWB is all about!

A HISTORY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

In the past couple of years, we have:

  • Raised over $15,000 for three local non-profit agencies (CYC, WVCA, and Nurse Family Partnership) to assist them with charitable causes.

  • Distributed 500 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to local children in need, which in turn, helps excite them about school.

  • Raised $24,000 for Ruth's Place, the only shelter for homeless women in Luzerne County.  This money made it possible for Ruth's Place to make capital improvements such as shower and laundry facilities in their new location.

  • Collected over 500 pounds of food for local food pantries during the spring when food pantries typically run short of supplies and local families face hunger on a daily basis.

  • Helped Earthly Angels host a family fun day for families of children with autism.

  • After the Susquehanna River flooded in 2011, funds were raised to help rebuild the West Pittston Children's Library.  Also, efforts were made to support local programs aiding families affected by the flood.
